Mar 19, 2010 - Whenever I meet people IRL that needs to learn magic I send them this video. It actually learns them alot, after they get the basics the rest usually comes by itself. But I would love to see more L2P magic videos.

Mar 19, 2010 - very good tutorial, and It makes sense that you wouldn't want to start throwing the ideas of dual lands, creatures that tap for mana, or haste out yet, but I would've maybe made a mention of a mulligan atleast, as they really aren't complicated but are pretty important.

Mar 19, 2010 - good idea i wish i had this when i learned to play. and to those complaining about the build it is the first video and deck building will come later on. i also think that this is good for people who played 2-3 years ago to learn the new rules. evan you might want to talk about standard because a nube at my store played a bunch of ravnica last week and thought it was legal because he got them last week but no complaints on the video

Dekzter Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - This has probably already been mentioned, but you forgot to play a Forest and cast your second Runeclaw Bears on turn 3.

vking7 Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - The captions need a bit of help with capitalization and random slashes out of nowhere, but otherwise, very well done, Evan.

meddlingmage23 Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - @blackermarket123, as a tutorial video, i think it'd be easier to explain with vanilla creatures than with a dude that has x/x+1 as its stats.

GodzillaPo0p Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - great start. this could be very helpful for new players. keep up the great work.

Denetine Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - It is always hard to explain to a new player all of the details in person on the spot, but being able to link them a video on youtube is a step up and will surely help me increase the player population in my friends. Thanks Evan!

jbrosrulez Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - Much like everyone else said, it's a bit fast so beginners might not get everything right away. I'm also surprised u didn't mention mulligans as that is a pretty basic thing at the start of every game

gmer412 Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - Great idea, and I think this is a great intro to the game. The stack wil be somewhat hard to explain, but not too difficult.

outterheaven999x Says:

Mar 19, 2010 - good idea but once your done with "Learn How To Play Magic" you should make a show were people can send in there questions about cards or situations they might have.

007grog3 Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - "We now get to the fun part... COMBAT!" lol, oh Evan.

serenades666 Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - lol agreed xD

SladeXeno Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - This is cool man. keep up the good work.

MacroIII Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - Good Idea Evan, but I think you made two mistakes. You missed your target audience for the "Basics" and failed to elaborate You crammed way too much and talked way too fast for anyone new to Magic to follow. You were too cut and dry... you need to make similes and metaphors for new players to understand what your talking about lol. Though as a fellow magic player I appreciate what you did and thought it was awesome... maby I am just missing what your point is with this video.

Phiz787 Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - WOW, wish i had this when i was learning magic.... I learned from a friend playing some crazy saproling spore counter deck.. Yuck. Anyways, this is fine and im not sure i agree with Macrolll's cramming way too much because this video can be played over and over again and paused at any time. This really is a 5/5. 1 Thing, sometimes your subtitles have some odd characters which i dont think you meant to have in there....

xCrimsonAngelfirex Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - Great video! I have been playing Magic for almost three months now, and videos like this help.

174point9grams Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - very nice. however, the the subtitles obscure some of the video. It would probably be a good idea to extend the video downwards so that they obscure a blank space instead of your land, the p/t of a creature, etc.

grundy9golem Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - Agreed!--> GodzillaPo0p: "great start."--> 007grog3: "We now get to the fun part... COMBAT!" Oops! You forgot to simply play a land each turn. 3 seconds more to teach good play!

hotmanham Says:

Mar 20, 2010 - With no one to protect them Put this into the youtube search engine. If you can get to minute 6 WITHOUT crying... I'll PERSONALLY send you 25.00 with paypal. Seriously. Try it.

showcase2505 Says:

Mar 21, 2010 - a little fast but great, magic has a lot of info and intricacies, so you should, in my opinion, do basic overview of each "part" of magic. Then do advance videos later, but you knew that. thanks anyway

LLJKmikec81 Says:

Mar 21, 2010 - You are glossing over too many of the basics and also going too much in detail right away. IE Why didn't the player draw a card to begin the game? What happens to the Giant Growth'd bear after the turn ends. Where does 5/5 bear come from? Slow it down and show the basic math for them. GG gives +3/+3 to my 2/2 bear etc... The beginner doesn't need to know what a sub type is. All they need to know is that it is a bear that hits for 2 and dies if it takes 2 or more damage.

TheReaperThanatos Says:

Mar 21, 2010 - It seemed you were rushing it a little in this video. You could easily do videos similar to Wizard's "How to Play" videos with having to do it word for word. I would suggest taking it slow, going over card types and play at a steady pace and try not to overwhelm new players. But for a first attempt at tutorial videos, its a good start.

cedes360 Says:

Mar 21, 2010 - hahaha my boyfriend is trying to teach me how to play magic XD this was really cool and helpful :) i suggest maybe talking a bit slower because at times i didnt catch what you said and had to listen again in the video. other than just take it a lil slower this was a very informative video and i love how you split your lessons into other vids. very helpful!!! thank you

felixkoi Says:

Mar 21, 2010 - I have to agree, I felt it all went very fast. I recently taught a friend of mine how to play, and you wouldn't believe how mind-numbing it was. She was either really stupid, or indicative of the how slowly new players get magic. I remember talking about combat in the context of football players trying to run past each other, and that was when she really started to get it, so I would agree with Macroll that metaphors are really crucial and helpful. Overall, good, but too fast.
